Co-operate Gmail On Your S60 Mailbox
When I was using my N80 Internet Edition, there was a SIS file of Yahoo GO,that came as a ready to install upon purchase. After installing the application it creates a Yahoo mailbox in the messaging folder and Yahoo mail started working fine on my phone. But after I received the N95 8GB there was no such application, and when I tried to install the SIS file I’ve extracted from the N80 it says this installation only supports N80 IE and 3250.There is no update of that version is available for S60 devices yet and the current Yahoo GO version that is v3.0 is a java application, also it doesn’t define a mailbox in your phone, instead it requires the application to start each and every time and the access the email through it.This turned out to be very disappointing and I was dieing to find a way to get my mail on my phone’s mailbox.Yahoo offers POP3 accounts but its not a free service like their mail service.
So I was desperately searching the web for a solution and finally stumbled upon my friend Mike’s N82 blog where he has written a post on configuring the mailbox for Gmail using IMAP4,but unfortunately I’m not using gmail. So I just gave a try with it for the Co-operate gmail address,ravindra.dissanayake@symbian-lifeblog.com and surprisingly with just a bit of setting tweaks it worked. The reason is both gmail and co-operate gmail use the same incoming and outgoing mail servers. Thanks Mike for this great tutorial and here’s an edited quoting of the Mike’s guide to configure gmail for your mailbox, now working great for your gmail co-operate accounts,
- Enable IMAP in your Gmail account settings.
- Select ‘Messaging’ > ‘Options’ > ‘Settings’ > ‘E-mail’ > ‘Mailboxes.’
- If you have never set up email on your phone before, select ‘Yes’ to define a new mailbox. If you already have other mailboxes, select ‘Options’ and then ‘New mailbox.’
- Select ‘Start’ to begin the setup wizard.
- Select ‘IMAP4′ and then ‘Next.’
- Enter your Gmail username (including ‘@Symbian-lifeblog.com‘) as the email address and select ‘Next.’
- Enter ‘imap.gmail.com’ as the incoming mail server and select ‘Next.’
- Enter ‘smtp.gmail.com’ as the outgoing mail server and select ‘Next.’
- Select the appropriate access point and then ‘Next.’
- Enter a descriptive name for the email account mailbox name.
- Once your mailbox is set up, select it from the email mailbox settings screen.
- Select ‘Connection settings’ > ‘Incoming e-mail.’
- Enter your Gmail username (including ‘@Symbian-lifeblog.com‘) and password.
- Select ‘SSL/TLS’ for your security (ports) and define your port as ’993.’
- Select ‘Back.’
- Select ‘Outgoing e-mail.’
- Enter your Gmail username (including ‘@Symbian-lifeblog.com‘) and password.
- Select ‘StartTLS’ for your security (ports) and define your port as ’587.’
- Select ‘Back’ and change any other settings according to your preferences.
If you are a co-operate gmail user all you have to do is just replace the “@Symbian-lifeblog.com” part with your email hosting address.
