Nokia Play To Brings DLNA To S^3

Nokia Play To is designed to ease the process of playing media stored on your mobile through remote devices. Once you have opened the application, choose which device to connect to, and then choose the photo, video or music file to play. In most cases the media will appear within in a few seconds on your chosen device (longer times are possible, depending on the size of the file and the speed of your wireless network).

We tested this with a Windows PC and found audio and images were played in around one second, with videos taking around three seconds. Similar results were observed on a Sony TV. Once a media item has begun playing, you can use the Nokia Play To application to find the next media item, while the first is played in the background.

You can also browse the files on your phone from a DLNA control point (player). In this instance, the UI will be controlled by the playback device, rather than the phone. In order to do this you will need to turn on the DLNA server in your phone, by going to Settings->Connectivity->Media Server.

DLNA compliant devices are more common that you may realise. For example Windows Media Player 11+ supports DLNA (you may need to enable this setting), which means any Windows PC can be used with Nokia Play To. In addition, many recent TVs and Blu-Ray players have this functionality built in. Also, the Xbox and PlayStation entertainment consoles also support the DLNA standard

A few days back Nokia announced that they will be updating the Nokia Ovi Store to support direct application updating. This update numbered as Store 2.8 is now live and is gradually being rolled out world wide.

We’ve got the update on our in house N8 and can say that the Store is much smoother now with the added benefit of app updates !

Nokia Bubbles Gets Updated

Nokia Beta labs has pushed out updates for their extremely popular homescreen replacement application called Nokia Bubbles. The application fixes several critical bugs. It is to be noted that the app still remains under active development and is not production ready as of now.

“This new version should work better with Ovi Store and other Qt applications, although it is still expected that there will be some problems until we can move to use a more stable (non-development) version. Otherwise, the package contains the same version of bubbles as before, with the exception of the maps bubble. That was taken out of the release because of problems that were found.”

Fring Out VOIP Solution Now Available

Mimotask – Qt Based Cross-Platform Task Manager Coming To Symbian And MeeGo

Synble , developer of cellphone applications , has just posted a video of their upcoming Task Manger. Mimotask has been built in Qt to allow for quick cross platform deployment. The task manager is being ported to Symbian , MeeGo , Maemo, Windows and Mac OS X. According to the developer , it will be possible to synchronize tasks between all the platforms. We’ve embedded a video of the application below and will keep you updated as we receive information.
